Functional medicine, as we practise it in Sydney CBD, is not alternative medicine. It is structured, evidence-based general practice organised around patterns rather than isolated findings.

Many people I see have had “normal” results but still feel unwell. Our role is to review your history, examination and investigations together, identify what is clinically meaningful, and decide what genuinely requires action.

The focus is clarity. That means prioritising what matters now, what should be monitored, and what is unlikely to add value.

Functional Medicine — Systems-Based Medical Assessment

Functional medicine consultations in Sydney CBD provide a structured, doctor-led way to assess persistent symptoms, clarify root causes and create a measurable prevention plan.

A functional medicine doctor looks at how symptoms, medical history, examination findings and test results connect across body systems. Rather than addressing fatigue, gut disturbance, weight change or inflammation in isolation, the goal is to identify the most likely underlying drivers and confirm (or rule out) them with targeted testing. Executive Medicine has been established since 1985 and applies this approach within mainstream, evidence-based practice.

People commonly seek a functional medicine consultation when they have ongoing symptoms despite “normal” initial tests — low energy, poor sleep, recurrent infections, digestive discomfort, brain fog, reduced resilience or gradual metabolic change. In these situations, it is often patterns over time that matter more than a single result.

What we assess

  • A detailed timeline of symptoms, triggers and progression to identify cause-and-effect patterns
  • Lifestyle load and recovery balance — sleep quality, occupational stress, training, alcohol and dietary patterns
  • Nutrient status where clinically relevant, including iron studies, B12/folate and vitamin D
  • Cardiometabolic risk trends such as glucose regulation, lipid patterns and blood pressure changes over time
  • Thyroid and hormonal markers when symptoms and standard results appear mismatched
  • Inflammation and immune signals when supported by history and examination
  • Medication and supplement interactions that may mask or amplify symptoms

Age and life stage influence interpretation. In your 20s and 30s, the focus is often on baseline risk, recovery capacity and common contributors to fatigue. From your 40s onward, cardiometabolic risk patterns and the cumulative effects of stress load become more clinically significant. In later decades, kidney and liver function trends, medication review and structured prevention planning become central to care.

How the assessment works

Your consultation is doctor-led and begins with a comprehensive medical history and examination. Pathology is selected according to symptoms and risk profile — not ordered indiscriminately. Where appropriate, cardiovascular screening may be included, particularly if energy, exercise tolerance or metabolic risk is a concern.

Results are interpreted in context. We clarify what requires immediate action, what should be monitored, and what is unlikely to be clinically significant. You leave with a prioritised plan that includes measurable targets, follow-up timing and referral or escalation where indicated.

Many patients choose a structured assessment format to support this integrated approach. Our Executive Express provides a focused baseline review. The Premium assessment includes broader cardiovascular screening, and Premium Plus+ offers the most comprehensive executive-level evaluation.

FAQs

Is functional medicine evidence-based?

Yes. In our clinic, functional medicine refers to a structured, systems-based application of mainstream medical principles. Testing and treatment recommendations are guided by clinical history, examination and established evidence — not alternative protocols.

Can a functional medicine doctor help if my blood tests were “normal”?

Sometimes. The key is reviewing trends, context and symptom patterns rather than isolated values. A consultation clarifies whether further targeted testing is appropriate or whether monitoring over time is more useful.

Do I need a full assessment to see a functional medicine doctor?

Not necessarily. Some patients book a standalone consultation. Others prefer a structured assessment such as Executive Express, Premium or Premium Plus+ to provide a comprehensive baseline before building a longer-term plan.
