This blood test can significantly change how we assess cardiovascular risk — and many patients have never had it measured.
It’s called Lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), and most standard cholesterol panels don’t include it.
Why this matters
You can eat well, exercise regularly, and have “normal” cholesterol levels — and still carry elevated cardiovascular risk.
Lp(a) is largely genetic, meaning lifestyle changes alone may not fully explain your risk profile.
What is Lipoprotein(a)?
Lipoprotein(a) is a cholesterol-related particle linked to cardiovascular disease. Unlike standard cholesterol markers, it is largely genetically determined.
You are born with your level, it remains relatively stable over time, and in most cases only needs to be measured once.
Why it changes management
Elevated Lp(a), seen in around 1 in 5 people, can significantly influence how cardiovascular risk is interpreted.
- Amplifies the impact of LDL cholesterol
- Accelerates atherosclerosis
- Increases the risk of heart attack and stroke
This can change treatment targets and determine whether more aggressive prevention is appropriate.
