Why this matters

Meeting exercise guidelines is important, but it does not fully offset the effects of prolonged sitting.

Research shows that even after accounting for physical activity, higher sedentary time is associated with increased risk of all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers.

Sedentary behaviour includes any waking activity with very low energy expenditure — such as working at a desk, commuting, or screen time.

Many people assume a workout can undo hours of sitting. Evidence suggests it does not.

As Professor David Dunstan explains, long periods of sitting reduce the overall health benefits — even in people who exercise.

That said, physical activity still matters. Higher activity levels are associated with lower overall risk, even among those who sit for long periods.

Why movement throughout the day matters

Breaking up sedentary time has measurable effects on physiology and long-term risk.

Regular movement can help regulate blood glucose and insulin levels, improve circulation and vascular function, increase energy levels, and support both cardiovascular and musculoskeletal health.

Small, consistent movement across the day is more important than most people realise.

Practical ways to reduce sedentary time

Alternating between sitting and standing can reduce continuous load on the body. A standing desk can help, but even simple position changes are useful.

Taking short movement breaks every 30 to 60 minutes is one of the most effective strategies.

Walking during lunch breaks, standing for phone calls, and using stairs instead of lifts all contribute meaningfully when done consistently.

Some people also incorporate light equipment at home or work, such as a treadmill or stationary bike, to increase baseline movement.
