Exercise Physiology & Metabolic Testing

A detailed view of cardiorespiratory fitness, resting energy use and body composition, brought together in one Exercise Physiology-led appointment.

  • Open to new and existing clients
  • Written results and recommendations

Understand how your body performs and uses energy

The combined package measures three different but related aspects of health and performance. Together, they provide useful baseline information for exercise planning, fitness improvement, nutrition decisions and future comparison.

Your Exercise Physiologist explains what the results mean for you and provides personalised written recommendations rather than leaving you with isolated numbers.

From measurement to action Objective testing creates a useful baseline. Personal interpretation helps turn it into practical decisions about training, fitness and long-term health.

Testing led by people who understand the whole picture

Every appointment is conducted and interpreted by an Accredited Exercise Physiologist. Tim and Grace explain the results clearly and connect them with your health, goals, training history and day-to-day life.

Three tests, interpreted together

Each component answers a different question about fitness, energy use and body composition. The tests may be booked individually or together as the combined package.

Exercise capacity

VO2 max testing

Using the CardioCoach metabolic mask and heart-rate monitoring, the test directly measures cardiorespiratory fitness through a graded exercise protocol performed on either a treadmill or stationary bicycle. The protocol is selected to suit your fitness level.

Cardiorespiratory fitness, reflected by VO2 max, is one of the strongest modifiable markers associated with long-term health and longevity.

Your report includes

  • Your measured VO2 max score
  • Aerobic and anaerobic thresholds
  • Heart-rate training zones
  • Recovery and fitness rating

ECG monitoring is not included in this standalone service.

Individual test
$300 + GST40–60 minutes

Energy requirements

Resting Metabolic Rate

Resting Metabolic Rate testing measures the energy your body uses at rest. It provides an individual result rather than relying solely on a population-based estimate.

How it can help

  • Establish a personal metabolic baseline
  • Inform nutrition and energy-intake discussions
  • Support more individualised recommendations
  • Provide a measure for future comparison
Individual test
$200 + GST30 minutes

Body composition

Tanita analysis

The medical-grade Tanita device uses bioelectrical impedance analysis to assess body fat, visceral fat, muscle mass, segmental body composition and body water. These results can be considered alongside your fitness and metabolic measurements.

What it contributes

  • A baseline beyond body weight alone
  • Information about body composition
  • Context for exercise and nutrition planning
  • A repeatable measure for tracking change

Not suitable during pregnancy or for people with a pacemaker, ICD or another implanted electronic medical device.

Individual test
$100 + GST10–15 minutes

A complete set of measurements, with practical interpretation

The 90-minute package brings all three tests into one coordinated service and includes an explanation of your results from an Accredited Exercise Physiologist.

  • VO2 max testing with CardioCoach
  • Resting Metabolic Rate testing
  • Tanita body-composition analysis
  • Written results for all three tests
  • Personalised written recommendations

Screening and medical clearance

Exercise testing needs to be appropriate for the individual. The clinic will guide you through the requirements before the appointment.

  1. 01

    Enquire with reception

Tell the team whether you are a new or existing client and what you would like to understand from the testing.

  2. 02

    Complete and return pre-screening

Before VO2 max testing, complete the supplied pre-exercise screening form and return it to Executive Medicine.

  3. 03

    Exercise Physiologist review

An Exercise Physiologist reviews your form against the approved screening criteria, then contacts you to confirm whether medical clearance is required and where it can be obtained.

  4. 04

    Attend your testing appointment

You will receive preparation instructions before attending. Testing proceeds only when it is considered appropriate and safe to do so.

  5. 05

    Receive your results

Your Exercise Physiologist explains the findings and provides written results and personalised recommendations.

Before your appointment

Complete instructions will be confirmed when your appointment is booked. The following guidance supports safe testing and more accurate results.

VO2 max testing

  • Rest your body: Avoid exercise and strenuous workouts for 12 to 24 hours beforehand.
  • Fast from food: Do not eat for four hours before your appointment.
  • Stay hydrated: Water can be consumed as usual.
  • Avoid stimulants: Avoid caffeine, tobacco, stimulating drinks and pre-workout supplements for at least four hours beforehand.

Resting Metabolic Rate

  • Fast from food: Avoid eating for at least four hours before testing.
  • Stay hydrated: Water can be consumed as usual.
  • Avoid exercise: Do not exercise or undertake strenuous physical activity on the day of testing.
  • Avoid stimulants: Avoid caffeine, tobacco and stimulant-containing medications on the day, where medically appropriate.
  • Medication: Continue prescribed medications unless your treating doctor advises otherwise.

Tanita body composition

  • Avoid exercise: Avoid strenuous physical activity for at least three to four hours before testing.
  • Food and fluids: Avoid large meals and excessive fluid intake immediately beforehand.
  • Avoid alcohol: Do not drink alcohol before testing.
  • Check suitability: Tell the clinic if you are pregnant or have an implanted electronic medical device, as Tanita testing will not be suitable.

VO2 max is also available within Executive Medicine’s doctor-led assessments

Direct VO2 max measurement with the CardioCoach mask is included in the Signature and Foresight Health Assessments and can be added to Foundational.

The complete health assessments are different services: they combine Exercise Physiology testing with pathology, clinical examination, medical interpretation and broader preventative screening.

Before you enquire

Can new clients book the package?

Yes. The package and individual tests are open to new and existing Executive Medicine clients. An Exercise Physiologist will review your completed screening form and let you know if medical clearance is needed before VO2 max testing.

Does the package include an ECG stress test?

No. This is a standalone Exercise Physiology service and does not include a doctor consultation. VO2 max testing uses the CardioCoach metabolic mask and heart-rate monitoring; it does not include ECG monitoring or a doctor-supervised exercise stress test.

Will I receive a written report?

Yes. You receive written results for the three tests together with personalised written recommendations, and your Exercise Physiologist explains the findings.

Can I book only one of the tests?

Yes. VO2 max testing is $300 + GST, Resting Metabolic Rate testing is $200 + GST and Tanita body-composition analysis is $100 + GST. The combined 90-minute package is $600 + GST.

How long does the appointment take?

The combined VO2 max, Resting Metabolic Rate and Tanita testing appointment takes 90 minutes. Booked individually, VO2 max testing takes approximately 40–60 minutes, Resting Metabolic Rate testing takes 30 minutes and Tanita analysis takes 10–15 minutes.

Speak with reception about testing

Reception can explain current availability, screening requirements and the next step for new or existing clients.
